How to Read a Sunscreen Label: What to Look for and What to Avoid

A few weeks ago I wrote about why mineral sunscreen is the safer choice for your skin and the ocean. If that post convinced you to make the switch (or you were already there), the next step is learning what you're actually buying.
Because here's the thing: not all mineral sunscreens are created equal. Two bottles can both say "mineral sunscreen" on the front and have completely different formulas inside. One might have five ingredients. The other might have thirty. The only way to know the difference is to flip the bottle over and read the label.
That sounds obvious. But sunscreen labels are confusing on purpose. So let's break it down.
How sunscreen labels actually work
Sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug in the United States. That means every bottle has to include a Drug Facts panel, just like cold medicine or pain relievers. This is actually good news for you, because drug labels follow a standard format that's easy to read once you know what you're looking at.
The two sections that matter most are Active Ingredients and Inactive Ingredients.
Active ingredients are the ones doing the sun protection. In a mineral sunscreen, this should be zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. That's it. If you see anything else listed as an active ingredient, like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, or avobenzone, you're looking at a chemical sunscreen (or a hybrid). The percentage listed next to each active ingredient tells you how much is in the formula.
Inactive ingredients are everything else: the base, the texture, the preservatives, the fragrance (if there is one), and whatever else the brand decided to put in there. This is where things get interesting, and where most people stop reading.
Don't stop at the actives
Most people check the active ingredients, see "zinc oxide," and assume they're good. But the inactive ingredient list can tell a very different story.
A mineral sunscreen can have zinc oxide as the active ingredient and still pack 25 or 30 inactive ingredients into the formula. Dimethicone (a silicone), PEG compounds, synthetic fragrances, phenoxyethanol, chlorphenesin. None of these are necessarily dangerous, but if you chose mineral sunscreen because you care about what goes on your skin, a mile-long list of synthetic fillers kind of defeats the purpose.
Compare that to brands that keep it simple. Badger uses just a handful of ingredients: zinc oxide, sunflower oil, beeswax, vitamin E, and jojoba oil. Raw Elements stays under ten ingredients, mostly organic. Waxhead keeps it to four: zinc oxide, coconut oil, beeswax, and cocoa powder. SurfDurt runs a similarly short list with zinc oxide, coconut oil, beeswax, and cocoa butter.
These brands are committed to short, recognizable ingredient lists. You can read every word on the label and actually know what it is. That's the standard worth looking for.
The general rule: if you can count the ingredients on one hand, or close to it, you're probably in good shape. If the list looks like a chemistry textbook, keep looking.
The chemical filters to avoid
If you read the chemical vs mineral post, you already know the names to watch for. Quick recap: oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, and avobenzone are the most common chemical UV filters. They absorb into your bloodstream, some have been flagged for endocrine disruption, and several are banned in Hawaii for reef damage.

What to look for instead
The two mineral active ingredients with the best safety profile are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The FDA classifies both as "generally recognized as safe and effective" (GRASE), which is a designation most chemical filters still haven't earned. Of the 16 sunscreen active ingredients on the market, only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have enough safety data for the FDA to propose them as GRASE. The other 12, including oxybenzone and avobenzone, are still waiting on additional testing.
Zinc oxide is the more common one in surf and outdoor sunscreens because it provides broad-spectrum protection on its own. Look for non-nano zinc oxide if you want particles that sit on top of your skin rather than being absorbed. "Non-nano" means the zinc particles are larger than 100 nanometers, big enough to form a physical barrier without penetrating into your body.
Titanium dioxide is the other mineral option. It's effective at blocking UV but doesn't cover the full UVA spectrum as well as zinc oxide does on its own. Many mineral sunscreens use both together.
As for tinted vs untinted: tinted mineral sunscreens use iron oxides to reduce the white cast. They can also offer some additional visible light protection. If you're someone who doesn't want to walk around looking like a ghost after applying, tinted is worth trying. But the white cast from untinted zinc is just the mineral doing its job. That visible layer is your protection.
"Reef safe" doesn't mean what you think
This one trips people up. You see "reef safe" or "reef friendly" on the front of a bottle and assume someone verified that claim. Nobody did. Those terms are not regulated by the FDA, the FTC, or any government agency. Any brand can print them on a label without testing a single thing.
A sunscreen can say "reef safe" and still contain ingredients that research has linked to coral damage. The label means nothing on its own.
What actually matters is checking the ingredient list yourself. Avoid chemical UV filters (oxybenzone and octinoxate are the biggest offenders for reef harm). Look for non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the actives. And check the inactives too, because even some preservatives and fragrances can be problematic for marine ecosystems.
If a brand has gone through Protect Land + Sea certification from the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory (HEL), that's one of the few third-party verifications that actually tests the full formula against a list of known pollutants. Unlike other certifications that rely on manufacturer self-reporting, HEL independently tests the finished product using forensic lab methods. It's not perfect, but it's better than a marketing claim on the front of the bottle.
The catch with clean sunscreen
Here's the honest part about choosing a clean mineral sunscreen with a short ingredient list: the simpler and thicker the formula, the harder it is to get off.
That's the trade-off. A sunscreen with four or five natural ingredients and 20%+ zinc oxide is going to sit on your skin like a shield. It won't rub in like a lightweight lotion. It won't rinse off in the shower with regular soap. That staying power is exactly what makes it good protection.
But you still need to get it off at the end of the day. Scrubbing doesn't work well and just irritates your skin. The better approach is oil-based removal, where you dissolve the zinc layer first, then rinse it away.
